Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such medications should be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
