"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a message pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

However, there remains one problem: The sender also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are not alone. Several high-profile fans have openly begged for the honor.

The evidence suggests something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy Award nominees.

Similar to the greatest groups, they're a inseparable gang. Their visuals frequently feature them striding in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such unfettered joy you find yourself thinking, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'After your show, I got a bass'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the ultimate compliment. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to start a band."

Award Milestone

The group are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge milestone," adds Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The project came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics detail breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed confidence demanded a fresh approach – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the percussion.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The band's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Future

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their position in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

Yet Haim will forever be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "There is nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still kicking."
