Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the season-opening trophy on fourteen different occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic leveler followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in Kuwait and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a comfortable win in the showdown featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup winners after the French winger opened the net early on.

Yet, Marseille fired two times in the closing moments to seize a surprise advantage. Initially, Mason Greenwood converted from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking twist of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a crucial leveler in the dying seconds to send the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, stopping crucial kicks from O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted with composure for PSG to complete a 4-1 penalty win.

Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the past thirteen seasons.
